Chicago Film Archives

As a video student at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, I made many trips to the film and video collection at the Chicago Public Library. I often incorporated this “found” footage in my projects. Like many of my colleagues, I was disappointed when the library had to remove the collection from its holdings. Imagine my excitement when I was asked to design a new site for the Chicago Film Archives, which had been preserving these films since 2003.

The Chicago Film Archives specializes in Chicago and Midwest history and culture. Always adding to their collection of amateur films, they sponsor “Home Movie Night” screenings throughout the year. Not only are their collections available to the public, but the organization encourages contemporary artists to experiment with the films through their public programming.

The website features a calendar of events as well as news about CFA’s ongoing preservation projects. This day-to-day activity is updated using a WordPress backend. Their collections archive is maintained using CollectiveAccess.
